Therapists for college students near University of Colorado Boulder
Hi everyone, I’m Amy, and I’m really glad you’re here. My approach to therapy is about creating a welcoming, nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard and supported. I’m trained in EMDR and also like to bring in approaches such as mindfulness, walking sessions, breath work, and practical skill-building, depending on what feels most helpful for you. I also draw from DBT, which stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy. In real life, that means learning concrete tools for things like calming yourself when emotions feel overwhelming, communicating more effectively in relationships, and finding ways to balance school, life, and stress. These skills are all about helping you feel more in control and supported in the day-to-day challenges you face. I’m also a mom, and I have deep respect and admiration for young adults — I really value the unique perspectives you bring to the world. My goal is to walk alongside you as you navigate challenges, discover your strengths, and build tools that support your growth both now and in the future.
Many students have mental health concerns from time to time. We feel stuck or face certain challenges. Sometimes we know what’s wrong and other times, we have the nagging sensation that something feels “off.” It can be stress, anxiety, depression, or academic pressures. When we understand the causes of your troubles, we can alleviate your symptoms. And, when we do, you’ll feel renewed and be a better student, friend, romantic partner, son or daughter. When your desire for your own welfare overrules your limiting beliefs and negative self-talk, what you aspire to starts flowing into your lives—be it a relationship, academic success. Your manifestations become effortless, without internal strife and resistance.

I work best with individuals who are interested in exploring their inner world. Those who benefit most from this work are often seeking to better understand their struggles and find renewed energy and meaning through the process. I work with you to explore and address the issues behind your emotional distress. Together, we will bring awareness to the ways you manage fear, pain, and anger. This exploration will contact the experiences you often avoid, including doubt and vulnerability. When you can experience yourself more fully, you reclaim lost parts of your self. Ultimately, this is a path to building trust in yourself and others. It is deeply rewarding—turning suffering into self-understanding and engagement with life.
Change is hard, and getting to know yourself is a process! Some of my clients are neurodivergent, and want support in adjusting to new surroundings and building new skills. I also work with people experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD, and with other mental health concerns. My background is in somatic, movement-based counseling. In sessions, we might spend time learning more about what your body is telling you, and working with it to find balance and relief. Sessions can also look like talking about life, using expressive art to explore your emotions, or practicing mindfulness skills.

me: In a relational, humanistic, and conversational style, and through an attachment-oriented lens, I am focused on harnessing the powerful dynamic of the therapeutic relationship, in order to help individuals locate within themselves a sense of meaning and purpose in the here and now. I am focused on developing each client’s ability to maintain internal validity and positive self-regard, in order to reduce self-shame, self-judgement, and self-harm. you: While I work with individual adults of all ages, most of my clients tend to be 25-45, and coming to therapy to work through a variety of human challenges and stressors often associated with complications that occur in the life-stage transitions from adolescence to early adulthood and early adulthood into middle age. For many of us, these life-stage transitions are often extended and/or delayed, leading to feelings of pscyho-emotional paralysis and “stuckness” in repeated patterns of behavior. My practice is also further specialized in working with performing artists and other creative/artistic professionals. The intersectionality of psycho-emotional health and creative identity/artistic process is an area of experience and particular interest to me. Having trained and worked professionally as an actor, prior to earning a master’s degree in clinical social work, I am deeply focused on using the shared language of artistic development to help other artists utilize the many tools and skills they’ve already developed for self-reflection and craft honing as artists, in order to help them create growth, change, and fulfillment in their personal and professional lives. Although many of my clients meet diagnostic criteria for depression, trauma, and anxiety, I aim to see people beyond the diagnosis and view them as the whole human beings they are. us: Together, we will have a meaningful relationship intended to support and foster your personal growth, resilience, healing, and ability to create internal validity, as well as meaning and purpose in the moment. Our relationship exists within the context and framework of weekly, or bi-weekly, 45-minute conversations, focused on examining all aspects of how your pscyho-emotional health and wellbeing correspond to your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. No human is broken. We are all operating in the exact way the human system was intended to operate, by adapting; sometimes for the better, and other times to our own detriment. We are all the logical conclusion of the sum of our total experiences. Therefore, we will work jointly to piece together your narrative in a way that connects the total sum of your experiences to your present thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns, in order to learn to move forward, create change, and become the future self that is still yet unrealized.

Here's the thing: Being a young adult today is hard. You're dealing with massive decisions about your future, trying to figure out who you are, managing relationships, and handling pressure from every direction. I am a licensed psychologist based in Lafayette, Colorado, working primarily with adults. My clinical approach blends psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theories, allowing me to tailor therapy to your specific needs. I believe that understanding our patterns is crucial to building a life that feels meaningful, fulfilling, and sustainable. As an LGBTQ+ ally, I am committed to the dignity of all individuals and strive to create a welcoming, safe, and confidential space. My style is relaxed, curious, and focused. I prioritize understanding more than just symptoms or diagnoses; I want to understand you. I encourage clients to be honest, take reasonable risks, and learn to trust themselves so they can move forward with courage and conviction. I bring over a decade of diverse experience to my practice. After earning my Doctor of Psychology degree from Rutgers University, I joined the faculty at Albany Medical College’s Department of Psychiatry. There, I supervised residents, lectured, and developed a model of psychotherapy integrating client-chosen music. I am currently licensed in Colorado, New York, and all PsyPact* states. Outside the office, I live in Erie with my wife, daughter, and our rescue pup, Maisie. You’ll usually find me riding my motorcycle, playing the cello, or trying everything in my power to make my 9-month-old giggle. A classically trained cellist in a "former life," I believe resolutely that music is medicine. I welcome inquiries and am happy to schedule a free consultation.
